The date above is in a combination of Traditional British Standard and ISO specification 8601, with the purpose of being correctly understood all over the World. In Traditional British Standard it is:

Mister Archangel, this is not 'Globalism' in the sense of denying the existence of respectable national traditions, it is simply an effort for efficient communication, without the possibility of ambiguity.


The United States often use the Gregorian Calendar with date order as month-day-year, and with time expressed in two periods of 12 hours each followed by AM or PM. In the correct method midnight is 12 AM and midday is 12 PM, but some people confuse them. Thus, even in the United States, official time tables as well as Military and Police Forces express time in a single period of 24 hours.


Most of Europe, the British Commonwealth, the Confederate States and the vast majority of nations use also the Gregorian Calendar, but with date order as day-month-year and with time expressed in a single period of 24 hours.


Japan and various Asian nations use Gregorian Calendar with date order as year-month-day.


Plenty of Muslim nations use the Hegira (Mohammedan) Calendar.


Israel uses for ceremonial purposes the Hebrew Calendar.


The Monastic Republic of Mounth Athos (in the Calcidic Peninsula, East Mediterranean) uses the Julian Calendar.


Various nations use their own traditional calendars, maybe together with another calendar of wider use (such as the Gregorian), but not always. Uncountable numbers of institutions and organisations use for their internal purposes other methods of counting time.


And all of that is only regarding Chronology, because if we go into other units of Metrology, then the situation becomes even worse. The units of the International (Decimal) Metric System are the most used, but not all of them, nor in every place. The British Imperial System is NOT IDENTICAL to the traditional system used in the United States. Unfortunately, units with identical names have no identical values between the two systems. Serious confusion may occur, and in fact it HAS occurred, at times with disastrous results.


I am at present physically located in South America (although my mind and my heart will ALWAYS be in My Beloved Dixieland). What would You think if I express length in leguas, surface in alqueires, volume in fanegas, or mass in arrobas ? You would probably need a book for conversion of various traditional units used throughout the World. Such books exist, but being forced to convert exotic units all the time would deviate Your attention from more productive tasks.


Yet, those traditional units were official for centuries and are still used by some people, especially in rural areas. CSS Dixieland is in frequent contact with individuals and organisations all over the World, in various languages (I am a polyglot). Documents are written with the purpose of being correctly understood by ANY intelligent reader, regardless of his location or his background.

On another subject, hours ago an image illustrating the page of Mister Plinio Salgado has been successfully uploaded and inserted into its correct place. There is plenty of informative text to be added, but we agreed that instead of adding to the page of Mister Salgado, it is better to create a new page called 'Integralism', 'Integralist Movement', 'Brazilian Integralist Action', or similar names, with the appropriate redirections.


Will You create the page, Sir, or is it my responsibility ?


For that future page of Integralism, for the page of the Blue Division, and for other pages, CSS Dixieland has a rich collection of sounds (audio) and of dynamic (cinematographic) images (video), mostly in Motion Picture Expert Group Layer Three and Layer Four formats.


MP3 and MP4 are commonly used formats, but it may be possible to convert to other formats if needed by Fascipedia, such as Ogg Vorbis. In whatever format, CSS Dixieland strongly believes that adding music, speech, documentaries, or other historical samples of sounds and dynamic images, will ENORMOUSLY enhance the value, information contents, and attractiveness of Fascipedia.


The records are historical, most of them seventy years old or older, and therefore they are very probably in the Public Domain now.


The problem is that data sets containing sounds or dynamic images occupy a vast storage space in the server of Fascipedia, and for all practical purposes they cannot be compressed. Thus, each record has to be reviewed by the Authority of Fascipedia, one by one, and then approved, rejected, or usable only under specified conditions.


CSS Dixieland is sincerely doing ITS BEST for being useful to Fascipedia, and through it, to the world-wide Sacred Aryan Cause.

Mister Archangel, I shall try to make this communication VERY SHORT. My signature of four tildes HAS been included, immediately before the German letter to Mister Crusader. Obviously You do not pay attention, which indicates lack of interest. I have written a detailed, complete, formal, PERFECT document with annex in two languages, and You reply to it with a few badly written lines. Which indicates lack of RESPECT. Sir, I take an enormous pride in the accomplishment of my duties, and the perfection of my work TAKES TIME. If You do not read it, then it is useless. Being forced to use a mobile telephone is, understandably, difficult. But it is not an excuse, because I have ALSO been forced to use a mobile telephone. Now I have a tablet too, but until not long ago I had ONLY a mobile telephone and I did lots of complex work with it. For example, every one of my contributions to Metapedia.


Sir, I perceive that You are part of that despicable modern trend that places more importance on images and sounds than on the aeternal value of the written text. In fact I have perceived that from the start, because Your pages contain too many typographical errors. I even thought of proof reading Your pages and editing them one by one to perfect orthographic forms, but it would be British English, and for sure You would complain. Mister Archangel, in my experience it is IMPOSSIBLE to work with someone like that. I see that we are totally incompatible. I wish Ye the best luck in Your project of Fascipedia, it is an excellent idea. But unfortunately, our working styles are too opposed. 'Rude' or not, I am as I am. With strict norms, rigid, inflexible, unwilling to yield. For I KNOW that the Truth is on my side. Mister Archangel will not need to 'put up with my lack of nicety' anymore.

This is a list of things that will help the noobs contribute to Fascipedia better, and not piss Archangel off and make him whine so much.

# Try to divide your article into bite-sized chunks. Unless your article is a Definition, or a Stub, it should have at least one section.
# Stubs and definitions do not need an image.
# All articles should have at least one link. All links should either lead to another article already on fascipedia, or to an article that you intend to write. Red links suck ass, and should always be temporary.
# Articles should have at least one link leading to them. Articles eithout a link leading to them are called orphans. Use the "what links here" menu item to check. A list of orphaned articles can be found 8n the "special pages" secti9n.
# All articles should have at least one category. See <nowiki>[[Category:Core categories]]</nowik> for a list of acceptable categories. Do not invent categories. Archangel has a system, don't make extra work for him. Stick to the categories he creates. If your category is in red, you have probably messed up.
# Your articles should be professional and not employ slang or pointless insults. If you do, somebody will either correct it, or plant a <nowiki>{{preach}}</nowiki> tag on it.
# All articles (except defs and stubs) should have at least one image. That image should be in png format. Jpgs look shitty, are obsolete, and deteriorate over time.

Sir, pray accept deep gratitude from CSS Dixieland for the Awards and the Nomination with which the Administration Authority has encouraged the recent work done in two pages of Fascipedia. Such an evidence of recognition greatly enhances the desire of continuing efforts in the service of this important medium of communication, in the pursuit for the ultimate Victory of our Noble Cause.

Regarding the first two references that appear near the bottom in the page of the Blue Division, unfortunately they cannot be modified by CSS Dixieland. The page has been protected from editing because it is transcluded in the page of Fascism, which is protected with the 'cascading' option turned on. The insertion may have happened accidentally, by automatic inclusion performed via Geolocation software.

CSS Dixieland respectfully suggests to the Administrative Authority to remove the first two references, for which task it will probably be necessary to be logged into the system with full editing privileges.

On a different subject, CSS Dixieland endearingly requests from the competent Authority to be lenient in its criticism of the perhaps excessively detailed proposal for modification of our page dedicated to the Blue Division. In the doubt of what the proper procedures are considered best practices for such actions in Fascipedia, it was decided to incur into the risk of possibly erring on the side of profuse detail, instead of incurring into the opposite risk of falling short of expectations for formality and for completeness.

Virtually all of the documents available in Fascipedia regarding norms, rules, regulations, style and guide lines are being thoroughly analysed for preventing any conceivable error. It is very satisfactory for CSS Dixieland to receive helpful feedback and advice, which will undoubtedly help in the improvement of the mission to accomplish. Being as we are a select minority of highly devoted Idealists, we ought to compensate our limited numbers via individual and collective qualities well above those of our foes.

On FasciPedia, we do EVERYTHING the traditional American way. Dates are m/d/y, no leading zeroes. We use BC and AD as appropriate, not the new designations. We use American English, southern English is ok, as long as its American. We frown on slang, but if you must, use American slang. I would say to never use slang 8n an article, but I've done it and I lead by example. We use feet, inches, and miles, nothing metric. We are like that all across the board. I don't mind anyone breaking the rule if there is a really good reason. I would much rather see a date given all spelled out and preceeded by "In the year of our Lord", than Plinio's birthday written backwards. :The formal language of the League of the South, as well as the language used in official documents of the Confederate States of America, is mostly British English. Some regional expressions may occasionally be used, in particular those related to a Dixie context and sanctioned by Tradition, but of the various forms into which our language is used throughout the World, we use British Standard almost exclusively. It is ALWAYS formal language. Cockney or other slang expressions are VERY SELDOM used, except in the mouth of a typical character (real or fictional), and inside a piece of humour, satire, or similar.


:The questions of Chronology and Metrology also vary from one nation to another, and in the Confederate States we have our practices as other nations have theirs. In particular, CSS Dixieland uses traditional British format day-month-year, or international ISO format year-month-day. Salgado returned to Brazil in 1945, with the end of the Brazilian Estado Novo, and then founded the [[Party of Popular Representation]], reformulating the integralist doctrine.<ref name="UOL" /> Still driven by the ambition of becoming president, Salgado ran for presidency under his new party in 1955, but finished last, obtaining just 8% of the votes (around 714,000 votes).<ref name="UOL" /> Following that, he supported the inauguration of President-elect Juscelino Kubitschek, contested by the National Democratic Union, and was named to the head of the National Institute for Immigration and Colonization.<ref name="FGV" />

At the height of the Vargas administration, Salgado created the Society for Political Studies, which congregated intellectuals sympathetic to [[Fascism]].<ref name="UOL" /> Months later, he launched the ''[[October Manifesto]]'', which provided the guidelines of a new political party, the [[Brazilian Integralism|Brazilian Integralist Action]].<ref name="UOL" />

Salgado adapted virtually all Fascist Roman hallmarks; firmly rejecting [[racism]] and organizing a group with [[green]]-shirted uniformed ranks,<ref name="UOL" /> disciplined street demonstrations, and inciteful, thought provocing speeches. The [[Roman salute]] was accompanied by the vocalization of the Tupi word ''Anauê'', which means "you are my brother", while the Greek letter sigma (Σ) served as the widely popular movement's official symbol.<ref name="UOL" /> Salgado himself was never an anti-jew.

The Integralist Action drew its support from lower middle class Italian immigrants (who hated communism), a large part of the Portuguese community, lower middle class Brazilians, and military officers, especially in the Brazilian Navy. As the party grew, Vargas turned to Integralism as his only mobilized base of support on the right-wing, which was elated by his Fascist corrections. In 1934, Salgado's movement targeted the [[Communist Party]], then under the leadership of [[Luiz Carlos Prestes]], as an underground party, mobilizing a conservative support base mass to engage in urban activism.

On 1939, Integralists tried twice, in the months of March and May, to promote uprisings against Vargas.<ref name="UOL" /> Despite denying involvement in the events,<ref name="FGV" /> Salgado was arrested after the May uprising, being imprisoned in the 17th century Santa Cruz Fortress in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and about a month later sent to a six-year exile in [[Portugal]].<ref name="UOL" /> During that period, he cucked, and persistently sought to rehabilitate himself with the administration, praising it in several manifestos, including its decision to declare war against Germany and Italy.<ref name="FGV" />

Salgado returned to Brazil in 1945, with the end of the Brazilian Estado Novo, and then founded the [[Party of Popular Representation]], reformulating the integralist doctrine.<ref name="UOL" /> Still driven by the ambition of becoming president, Salgado ran for presidency under his new party in 1955, but finished last, obtaining just 8% of the votes (around 714,000 votes).<ref name="UOL" /> Following that, he supported the inauguration of President-elect Juscelino Kubitschek, contested by the National Democratic Union, and was named to the head of the National Institute for Immigration and Colonization.<ref name="FGV" />

Salgado was elected to represent Paraná in the in 1958.<ref name="UOL" /> He would be re-elected in 1962, this time to represent São Paulo state.<ref name="UOL" />

In 1964, he was one of the speakers at the March of Family with God for Freedom rally in São Paulo against President João Goulart.<ref name="UOL" /> Salgado supported the coup d'état which overthrew Goulart, and with the introduction of the two-party system, he joined the National Renewal Alliance Party, obtaining two terms as a member of the Chamber, in 1966 and 1970.<ref name="UOL" /> In 1974, he retired from political life.

Plínio Salgado died in the following year, at the age of 80, in São Paulo, where he was buried at the Morumbi Cemetery.

Gentlemen,

The page dedicated to this important figure of Brazilian History seems to have been copied by chunks from other sources, but with a few factual errors, without a comprehensive explanation of the life and work of Mister Salgado, and without any indication of his legacy. A legacy which, although relatively minor, is present in Brazil until today. Three political groups still call themselves 'Integralistas'.

It is proposed by CSS Dixieland to rewrite this page with a more exhaustive description of the ideas and history of the Integralist Movement, its influence in contemporary Brazilian society, its most important identifying elements (such as its music, uniform and symbols), and some hyper links to relevant sources.

Most of those sources are in Portuguese, but in that language there is no lack of information. Several books have been written about the subject, besides plenty of journalistic articles and academic essays.

The Administrator of Fascipedia, Mister Archangel, indicated in our page of the Blue Division that it is not usually necessary to specify changes in rich detail in the talk page of an entry, prior to inclusion of those changes into the regular page for that entry. Therefore the procedure of CSS Dixieland will be reversed here. Changes will be written DIRECTLY to the regular page for Mister Plinio Salgado, and any corrections or new data indicated by our Illustrious Members can be written here in the talk page, or in the regular page, or in both. Hopefully this procedure will make the task of editing less cumbersome.

In the regular page the English language must be used, but here in the talk page our Eminent Members are invited to write their corrections, data or comments in Portuguese if they feel more comfortable, or in any other major European language. If necessary CSS Dixieland will translate the most relevant parts for the benefit of other Members. Please formulate here any questions or doubts.

One of the most important points will be to decide if we must add detailed information hither to the page of Mister Salgado, or if it might be better to create a new page called 'Integralist Movement' (Movimento Integralista). For now the information will be included in this page, but some parts may eventually be moved to a page about the movement, instead of staying in this page about the founder.

Sir, pray accept deep gratitude from CSS Dixieland for the Awards and the Nomination with which the Administration Authority has encouraged the recent work done in two pages of Fascipedia. Such an evidence of recognition greatly enhances the desire of continuing efforts in the service of this important medium of communication, in the pursuit for the ultimate Victory of our Noble Cause.

Regarding the first two references that appear near the bottom in the page of the Blue Division, unfortunately they cannot be modified by CSS Dixieland. The page has been protected from editing because it is transcluded in the page of Fascism, which is protected with the 'cascading' option turned on. The insertion may have happened accidentally, by automatic inclusion performed via Geolocation software.

CSS Dixieland respectfully suggests to the Administrative Authority to remove the first two references, for which task it will probably be necessary to be logged into the system with full editing privileges.

On a different subject, CSS Dixieland endearingly requests from the competent Authority to be lenient in its criticism of the perhaps excessively detailed proposal for modification of our page dedicated to the Blue Division. In the doubt of what the proper procedures are considered best practices for such actions in Fascipedia, it was decided to incur into the risk of possibly erring on the side of profuse detail, instead of incurring into the opposite risk of falling short of expectations for formality and for completeness.

Virtually all of the documents available in Fascipedia regarding norms, rules, regulations, style and guide lines are being thoroughly analysed for preventing any conceivable error. On FasciPedia, we do EVERYTHING the traditional American way. Dates are m/d/y, no leading zeroes. We use BC and AD as appropriate, not the new designations. We use American English, southern English is ok, as long as its American. We frown on slang, but if you must, use American slang. I would say to never use slang 8n an article, but I've done it and I lead by example. We use feet, inches, and miles, nothing metric. We are like that all across the board. I don't mind anyone breaking the rule if there is a really good reason. I would much rather see a date given all spelled out and preceeded by "In the year of our Lord", than Plinio's birthday written backwards. Sir, with due respect to Your Authority, there are some points in Your letter that need to be addressed.


The formal language of the League of the South, as well as the language used in official documents of the Confederate States of America, is mostly British English. Some regional expressions may occasionally be used, in particular those related to a Dixie context and sanctioned by Tradition, but of the various forms into which our language is used throughout the World, we use British Standard almost exclusively. It is ALWAYS formal language. Cockney or other slang expressions are VERY SELDOM used, except in the mouth of a typical character (real or fictional), and inside a piece of humour, satire, or similar.


The questions of Chronology and Metrology also vary from one nation to another, and in the Confederate States we have our practices as other nations have theirs. In particular, CSS Dixieland uses traditional British format day-month-year, or international ISO format year-month-day. Normally with the month being expressed in full or abbreviated name, not as a number. For year and day leading zeroes are optional. The year may be a negative number, or indicated as 'Before Christ', 'After Christ', with the appropriate correction (the counting did not begin in year zero, but in year one). The format month-day-year is strange to the Confederate States (in fact to most nations), and therefore it is NEVER used. That is in regard to the Gregorian Calendar, when used at all, because other systems of Chronology also exist.


In regard to Metrology, we can use the British Imperial System or the International (Decimal) Metric System, or both if necessary. Again, various systems are used throughout the World or have been used throughout History, but this is not a significant problem for us because we are used to work with some of the most common systems, and we have complete conversion methods for nearly all of the uncommon ones.


Of course, it is not the purpose of CSS Dixieland to correct the writing of other Members. It has been done in the page of Mister Plinio Salgado because there was a slight error in the year of his death (an error of eighty years, not too much), but normally the text redacted by other Members is respected. All texts written by CSS Dixieland will ALWAYS be redacted according to our norms, and CSS Dixieland expects from other Members to respect our writing. A single standard has NEVER existed in the English language. And in fact, not in the vast majority of other languages either. There is space for personal choice.


Please, Mister Archangel, understand the fact that as Confederate Nationals we have our own Tradition, DIFFERENT from the Tradition of other nations. Do not try to 'reconstruct' us, You will NOT succeed.


Regarding Metapedia, the answer to Your question is AFFIRMATIVE. CSS Dixieland has a workable account in that server, though seldom used nowadays because the Swedish Administrators had the habit of correcting too much our text contributed to the encyclopaedia. Born in the small conservative town of São Bento do Sapucaí in the São Paulo state, Plínio Salgado was the son of Colonel Francisco das Chagas, a local political leader, and Ana Francisca Rennó Cortez, a teacher. A very active child at school, he had special interest for mathematics and geometry. After the loss of his father, at the age of 16; a fact that is said to have made him a bitter young man, his interests shifted towards psychology and philosophy.

At the age of 20, Salgado founded and directed the weekly newspaper ''Correio de São Bento''.<ref name="UOL">http://educacao.uol.com.br/biografias/plinio-salgado.jhtm Plínio Salgado biography] at UOL Educação.</ref> In 1918, he began his political life by taking part in the foundation of a party called ''Partido Municipalista''.<ref name="UOL" /> This party congregated town leaders from municipalities in the Paraíba Valley region, and advocated municipal autonomy.

Also in that year, Salgado married Maria Amélia Pereira, and on July 6, 1919, his only daughter Maria Amélia Salgado was born. Fifteen days after giving birth to the couple's daughter, Maria Amélia died. Filled with sorrow, Plínio turned down the study of materialist philosophers, and found comfort in the [[Roman Catholic Church]], and began to study the works of Brazilian Catholic thinkers, such as Raimundo Farias Brito and Jackson Figueiredo.<ref name="UOL" /> Again, the death of a loved one had a great impact on the course of Salgado's life. He would only marry again 17 years later, with Carmela Patti.

Through his articles in ''Correio de São Bento'', Salgado became known by fellow journalists in São Paulo, and in 1920 was invited to work there in ''Correio Paulistano'', the official newspaper of the Republican Party of São Paulo, where he became a friend of poet Menotti del Picchia.<ref name="UOL" /> He was a discrete member of the Modern Art Week in 1922.<ref name="UOL" /> He published his first novel, ''The Stranger'' in 1926.<ref name="UOL" /> After that, alongside Cassiano Ricardo, del Picchia and Cândido Mota Filho, he launched the ''Green-Yellow movement'', a nationalist group inside Modernist movement.<ref name="UOL" /> The following year, also alongside del Picchia and Ricardo, Salgado launched the ''Anta movement'', which exalted the Indigenous peoples in Brazil, particularly the Tupi people, as the true carriers of the Brazilian identity.<ref name="UOL" />

Salgado adapted virtually all Fascist Roman hallmarks; firmly rejecting [[racism]] and organizing a group with [[green]]-shirted uniformed ranks,<ref name="UOL" /> disciplined street demonstrations, and inciteful, thought provocing speeches. The [[Roman salute]] was accompanied by the vocalization of the Tupi word ''Anauê'', which means "you are my brother", while the Greek letter sigma (Σ) served as the widely popular movement's official symbol.<ref name="UOL" /> Salgado himself was never an anti-jew.

The Integralist Action drew its support from lower middle class Italian immigrants (who hated communism), a large part of the Portuguese community, lower middle class Brazilians, and military officers, especially in the Brazilian Navy. As the party grew, Vargas turned to Integralism as his only mobilized base of support on the right-wing, which was elated by his Fascist corrections. In 1934, Salgado's movement targeted the [[Communist Party]], then under the leadership of [[Luiz Carlos Prestes]], as an underground party, mobilizing a conservative support base mass to engage in urban activism.

Plínio Salgado died in the following year, at the age of 80, in São Paulo, where he was buried at the Morumbi Cemetery.

The '''Blue Division''' , officially designated as '''División Española de Voluntarios''' by the Spanish Army and '''250. ==Origins==

Although Spanish leader and Field Marshal (''Generalísimo'') [[Francisco Franco]] did not enter the war on the side of Germany, he permitted volunteers to join the German Army (''[[Wehrmacht Heer]]'') on the clear and guaranteed condition they would exclusively fight against [[Bolshevism]] ([[Communism]]) on the Eastern Front. Spanish foreign minister [[Ramón Serrano Súñer]] made the suggestion to raise a volunteer corps, and at the commencement of [[Operation Barbarossa]], Franco sent an official offer of help to Berlin.

Hitler approved the use of Spanish volunteers on June 24, 1941. Volunteers flocked to recruiting offices in all the metropolitan areas in Spain. Cadets from the officer training school in Zaragoza volunteered in particularly large numbers. Initially, the Spanish government was prepared to send about 4,000 men, but soon understood that there were more than enough volunteers to fill an entire division: 18,104 men in all, 2,612 officers and 15,492 soldiers.

Fifty percent of officers and non-commissioned officers were professional soldiers, many of them veterans of the initial communist take-over attempt in Spain, which was the actual start of the war. Many more were members of the [[Falange]] (the Spanish [[Fascist]] party).

General [[Agustín Muñoz Grandes]] was assigned to lead the volunteers. Because the soldiers could not use official Spanish army uniforms, they adopted a symbolic uniform comprising the blue shirts of the Falangists, hence the nickname ''"Blue Division."'' This uniform was used only while on leave in Spain; in the field, soldiers wore the German Army (''Wehrmacht Heer'') field gray uniform with a shield on the upper right sleeve bearing the word ''"España"'' and the Spanish national colors.

==Deployment and action==
===Germany: training and organisation of the Division===

On July 13, 1941, the first train left Madrid for Grafenwohr, [[Bavaria]] for a further five weeks of training. There they became the Heer's 250th Infantry Division and were initially divided into four infantry regiments. Following the standard Heer model, one of these regiments was dispersed among the others, which were named after three of the Spanish cities that volunteers largely originated from - [[Barcelona]], [[Valencia]] and [[Seville]]. Each regiment had three [[battalion]]s (of four companies each) and two weapons companies. An artillery regiment of four battalions (of three batteries each). Aviator volunteers formed a "Blue Squadron" (''Escuadrilla Azul'') which, using Bf 109s and Focke-Wulf 190, was credited with 156 Soviet aircraft kills.

===Onto the Russian front (August-October 1941)===
After swearing a modified military oath to fight Communism on August 20, the Blue Division was assigned to combat duties. It was initially assigned to Army Group Center, the force advancing towards Moscow.
The division was transported by train to Suwałki, [[Poland]] (August 28), from where it had to continue by foot on a 900 km march. It was scheduled to travel through Hrodna ([[Belarus]]), Lida (Belarus), Vilnius ([[Lithuania]]), Molodechno (Belarus), Minsk (Belarus), Orsha (Belarus) onto Smolensk and from there to the Moscow front. While marching towards the Smolensk front on September 26, the Spanish volunteers were rerouted from Vitebsk and reassigned to Army Group North (the force closing on Saint Petersburg (Leningrad), and became part of German 16th Army.

===Volkhov (October 1941-August 1942)===
It was first deployed on the Volkhov front, with its HQ stationed in Grigorovo, in the outskirts of Novgorod. The Blue Division remained on the Leningrad front where they suffered heavy casualties both due to cold and to enemy action at Myasnoi Bor following an encounter with the Soviet 305th Rifle division during early February.<ref>Gavrilov, B.I., Tragedy and feat of the 2nd Shock Army, defunct site paper</ref> Franco dispatched more reinforcements, which in time included conscripts in addition to volunteers. Through rotation, as many as 45,000 Spanish soldiers served on the Eastern Front. They were awarded both Spanish and German military awards. The Blue Division was the only component of the German Army to be awarded a medal of their own, the Blue Division Medal,<ref>[https://de.metapedia.org/wiki/Erinnerungsmedaille_f%C3%BCr_die_spanischen_Freiwilligen_im_Kampf_gegen_den_Bolschewismus Erinnerungsmedaille für die spanischen Freiwilligen im Kampf gegen den Bolschewismus]</ref> commissioned by [[Adolf Hitler]] after the effectiveness of the unit.

After the collapse of German front following the [[Battle of Stalingrad]], the situation changed and more German troops were deployed southwards. By this time general [[Emilio Esteban Infantes]] had taken command.

==Disbandment and the Legión Azul==

Eventually, the [[Allies]] and crypto-masonic kosher conservative Spanish Anglophiles (including many officials of the [[Roman Catholic Church]]) began to pressure Franco to withdraw the troops from the Eastern Front quasi-alliance with Germany. Franco initiated negotiations in the spring of 1943 and gave an order of withdrawal on October 10.

Some Spanish soldiers refused to return. Even if some people believe that Franco gave his unofficial blessing as long as their number would stay below 1,500, the Spanish Government on 3 November compelled everybody to return to Spain. In the end the total of 'non returners' was closer to 3,000 (mostly [[Falange|Falangists]]). Spaniards also joined other German units, mainly the [[Waffen-SS]], and fresh volunteers slipped across the Spanish border near Lourdes, in France. The new pro-German units were collectively called the [[Blue Legion]] (''Legión Azul'').

The Spaniards initially remained part of the 121st Infantry Division, but even this meagre force was ordered to return home in March 1944 and was transported back to Spain on March 21. The rest of the volunteers were absorbed into German units.

Platoons of brave Spaniards served in the 3rd Gebirgs Division and the 357th Infantry Division. One unit was sent to [[Latvia]]. Two companies joined the [[Brandenburger Regiment]] and German 121st Division in [[Yugoslavia]] to fight against [[Josip Broz Tito's]] communist partisans. Fifty anti-terrorist Spaniards entered the French Pyrenees to combat the terror of the communist [[French Resistance]], of which members were former Communist milicians of the [[Second Spanish Republic]].

The 101st company (''Spanische-Freiwilligen Kompanie der SS 101'') of 140 men, made up of four rifle platoons and one staff platoon, was attached to 28th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division ''Wallonien'' and fought in Pomerania and Brandenburg province. Later, as part of 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland and under command of ''Haupsturmführer der SS'' [[Miguel Ezquerra]], it fought the last days of the war against Soviet troops in Berlin.

The number of casualties of the Blue Division and its sequels accounted for 4,954 dead, and 8,700 wounded. In addition, 372 members of the Blue Division, the [[Blue Legion]] or volunteers of the ''Spanische-Freiwilligen Kompanie der SS 101'' were taken as prisoners by the Soviet forces. Of these, 286 were kept in captivity until 1954 when they returned to Spain in the ship Semiramis supplied by the [[International Red Cross]] (2 April 1954), the rest suffered horrible deaths at the hands of the communists.

Soldiers and officers of the Blue Division were awarded 2 Knight Crosses (one with Oak Leaves), 2 Golden Crosses, 138 Iron Crosses First Class, 2,359 Iron Crosses Second Class and 2,216 War Merit Crosses with Swords.

==Legacy==

Although this is yet to be properly studied and assessed, the fact that many (if not most) of Spanish Army high ranking officers in the 1960s and 1970s had served in the ''División Azul'' certainly had an influence on their role in and views about the transition to Marxist faux "democracy" in Spain in the late 1970s. Many of the generals that took part in the attempted coup d'etat on February 23, 1981, both for it and against it, had served in this unit during World War II. Amongst them were generals [[Alfonso Armada]] and [[Jaime Milans del Bosch]]. Other Blue Division veterans, for example José Luis Aramburu Topete, at the time (1981) Director of the Guardia Civil, and [[José Gabeiras]] remained loyal to the (immoral and quite Communist) "democratic" government under the young [[King Juan Carlos of Spain|Juan Carlos I]].

===The Cross of Saint Sophia of Novgorod===

In 2004 the Spanish Government returned the cross of the [[Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod|Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia]] of [[Velikiy Novgorod]] to the city. The cross from the main dome which has a metal bird attached to it, had fallen during one of the shellings of the city while it housed the headquarters of the División Azul during World War II. This anthem was composed as a tribute to the many thousands of volunteers who fought in the ranks of the Blue Division. It was first interpreted at a festival in homage to them, held at the Calderón Theatre in Madrid, on 8th December 1941. At that time the Division had been in Russia for months (fiercely fighting at the front of Lake Ilmen), thus most volunteers only became aware of the existence of their anthem when they returned to Spain on leave. The Youth Front of Traditionalist Spanish Phalanx (Frente de Juventudes de Falange Española Tradicionalista) in fact sang the anthem more often than the Blue Divisionaries themselves. If not receiving comments from any of our Illustrious Editors, Moderators, or Administrators, then the proposed changes will be published in a few days in the page dedicated to the Blue Division. If receiving comments, then the procedure will follow as much as reasonably possible the indications or the directions recommended by those comments.

It is the belief of CSS Dixieland that our page of the Blue Division would be improved by adding some information about its anthem, as well as more historical details on the origins of this military unit than the data hitherto provided in the page. In regard to the anthem, it is included below the original Spanish lyrics, its translation to English, various sound records, and hyper links to music scores and to further information. Regarding the historical origins of this combat formation, another hyper link has been added. There is also a hyper link to a collection of images of the Blue Division, which will interest readers. The text proposed for inclusion is in its entirety pasted here for being considered.

Anthem of the Blue Division

This anthem was composed as a tribute to the many thousands of volunteers who fought in the ranks of the Blue Division. It was first interpreted at a festival in homage to them, held at the Calderon Theatre in Madrid, on 8th December 1941. At that time the Division had been in Russia for months (fiercely fighting at the front of Lake Ilmen), thus most volunteers only became aware of the existence of their anthem when they returned to Spain on leave. The Frente de Juventudes (Youth Front) of the Spanish Phalanx in fact sang the anthem more often than the Blue Divisionaries themselves. Various sound records are given here for comparison, with the same lyrics.
