So basically the rule is not ti link to Wi***edia, but its perfectly fine to cut and paste sources. In fact you are free to cut and paste, say, an entire paragraph or two if its modified heavily enough that it looks totally different, and has become something new. This is a list of things that will help the noobs contribute to Fascipedia better, and not piss Archangel off and make him whine so much.

*Try to divide your article into bite-sized chunks. Unless your article is a Definition, or a Stub, it should have at least one section.

* Stubs and definitions do not need an image.
* Archie likes to randomly colorize black and white images. If you upload an image and you would rather he didn't just let him know.
* All articles should have at least one link. All links should either lead to another article already on fascipedia, or to an article that you intend to write. Red links suck ass, and should always be temporary.
* Articles should have at least one link leading to them. Articles eithout a link leading to them are called orphans. Use the "what links here" menu item to check. A list of orphaned articles can be found in the "special pages" section.
* Do not capitalize "jew" or similar word.
* All articles should have at least one category. See <nowiki>[[Category:Core categories]]</nowiki> for a list of acceptable categories. Do not invent categories. Archangel has a system, don't make extra work for him. Stick to the categories he creates. If your category is in red, you have probably messed up.
*Archie would appreciate if new articles contained at least one link and at least one category and no wierd stuff like all CAPS or anything like that.
* Your articles should be professional and not employ slang or pointless insults. If you do, somebody will either correct it, or plant a <nowiki>{{preach}}</nowiki> tag on it.
* All articles (except defs and stubs) should have at least one image. That image should be in png format. Jpgs look shitty, are obsolete, and deteriorate over time.

In opposition to the trend towards both mass suffrage and independent trade unionism, it promotes a form of functional representation - everyone would be organized into vocational or industrial associations integrated with the state through representation and administration. In America, These would be congressmen. It was actually one of The ideas proposed by The American founding fathers.

The idea was that if these groups (especially capital and labor) could be imbued with a sense of mutual rights and obligations, a stable order based on "organic unity" could be established. This worked in Rome, The Holy Roman Empire, and other [[fascist]] societies. Although The idea of industrial parliaments was commonly raised in liberal democracies after WWI, most states that explicitly adopted a corporative form of representation were the [[Fascism|fascist]] administrations of Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Vichy France and others.

:: Well, I suppose now that I have to wait, I might as well explain what I meant by "O'Duffy WAS the Blueshirts!". In modern Ireland, there is apparently much debate over whether or not the Blueshirts were Fascist, there is no such debate for O'Duffy. Despite O'Duffy making the Fine Gael party what it is, giving the National Guard the blue shirts for which they are named, and leading it throughout its only period of relevancy, the Fine Gael today denounces him just as the original founder of the ACA denounced fascism in the 60s (I think it was the 60s, at least). O'Duffy led the remnants of the Blueshirts that actually followed him and his Fascist ideals into Spain, and it was this splinter of the Blueshirts, not the "legitimate" now youth-org Blueshirts of Fine Gael, that fought in Spain. To summarize, O'Duffy is the cause and epitome of everything that made the Blueshirts noteworthy and great, this man is a hero who is dragged through the mud as a stain on the history of Fine Gael, when he is the only reason they exist. Material support came in the form of weapons smuggling -done through ships flying incorrect flags or displaying improper markings-, the dispatching of military advisers, a token fighting force of under 500 men and a meek attempt at organizing international volunteering efforts for the Republican side. Weapons delivered were said to be of varying quality, with the only reliably up-to-date technology provided being aircraft. Estimated material support includes between 634-806 aircraft, 331-362 tanks and 1,034-1,895 artillery pieces.

All of this was paid for with 510 tonnes of gold from taken from the Bank of Spain, around 72.6% of the bank's gold reserves. The ensuing monetary crisis was blamed on the free market by the Republicans. Nationalists theorized that this economic strife was planned for in draining the nation's gold reserves, which could very well be true given the Republicans exchanged the remaining 156 tonnes for currency with France. Ramenta Plumbi: Most people alive today aren't out there writing auto-biographies on them organizing fascist groups, and for good reason. So, I'm not too sure much more than a picture could be added to this page. However, I feel it's important to have something covering the founder of a rather prominent modern Nat-Soc group, and to highlight the unfair treatment he has received from the legal system.

Christopher Hood is a 23 year old Fascist activist and founder of [[NSC 131|NSC-131]] from Pepperell, MA. Recently, he was put through court and charged with one count of "Affray", or disturbing the peace with physical conflict. This was due to a fight between NSC members peacefully protesting outside of a drag-queen story hour event in Jamaica Plain and 2 counter protestors. Christopher was not present at this protest, and the charges against the counter protesters were dropped the day of him entering court.

Thankfully, the charge of affray carries no jail time.

I seem to have lost access to the Condor Legion page, thankfully there is only one more minor edit I wish to give it tonight.
If you could, may you change the linking of SS Marschiert in Feindesland from Teufelslied to SS Marschiert in Feindesland?
While I'd love to emphasize the universality the song has experienced in opposition to communism through its various renditions, and Tuefelslied is possibly the most well known title for the tune not attached to a specific group, the title of "Teufelslied" was never used in Germany to my knowledge, and the page being named "The Devils Song" holds some rather negative connotations.

Material support came in the form of weapons smuggling -done through ships flying incorrect flags or displaying improper markings-, the dispatching of military advisers, a token fighting force of under 500 men and a meek attempt at organizing international volunteering efforts for the Republican side. Weapons delivered were said to be of varying quality, with the only reliably up-to-date technology provided being aircraft. Estimated material support includes between 634-806 aircraft, 331-362 tanks and 1,034-1,895 artillery pieces.

All of this was paid for with 510 tonnes of gold from taken from the Bank of Spain, around 72.6% of the bank's gold reserves. '''Third Positionism''' is a political ideology advocating the usage of middle-ground policies between what would traditionally be called [[Communism]] (heavy State control over economic mechanisms, State control over all aspects entirely, heavy taxation and class warfare) and [[Capitalism]] (free-market liberalism, the priority of big business in a competitive, deregulated economic environment), while proposing new and revolutionary policies to accompany a Third Positionist manifesto.

=History=
Third positionism is a branch of [[Fascism]] which came to popularity during the early part of the 1900's, primarily in Europe and the United States, but its roots can be seen all throughout European history. The third position umbrella encompasses ideologies such as Fascism, National Socialism, Ethno-Nationalism, Tribalism, Korean Juche, syndicate ism, localism, and smaller movements such as back to the land, and animist breakaway groups. Third position is explicitly anti communist and anti capitalist, embracing hybridism in both government and economics.

The third position is naturally anti Zionist, and anti new world order.

Men like Wat Tyler of 1300's England and Italy's Da Vinci brought the basics of populism to the forefront during their own times with ideals rooted in both traditional viewpoints as well as "radical" ideas of bestowing the common man with a chance at upward mobility and education. Rejecting the false dichotomy of establishment right and left, they instead chose to look for truths wherever they may be present, laying the groundwork for modern third position theory.

Third position became well recognized as a political movement during and after [[The World's War Against Communism]] as many National Socialists and Fascists embraced it. Owing to its malleability to pull from both the right and left equally regarding populist issues, third position has created some strange ideological bedfellows within its ranks. [[Strasserism|Strasserites]] of the National Socialist left share the stage with [[Juan Peron]]'s authoritarian populism, and Qaddafi's national Arab-ism in Libya.

In the US, third position found its spectrum amongst the leftwing worker's rights populism of men like Huey Long, and staunch American right nationalism of George Wallace. Movements to reject both Capitalism and Communism came forth to encompass the modern third position landscape. Today, the works of the "New Right" and men like [[Alain De Benoist]] highlight where the group is moving in the modern world with his critiques of neo-liberalism and late stage democracy. Jonathan Bowden's critiques of both established right and left, and refusal to be labeled as either give good insight into third position's insistence upon being above strict ideological polarization.

==Beliefs and Ideology==
From its inception, third position-ism has been a catch all for politics that do not align with the all encompassing [[jews|jewish]] Hegelian Dialectic, and the false dichotomy that it enshrines. It is claimed that third position stands in stark contrast to all things mainstream, but the reasoning behind this often goes beyond what simple comprehension those in the mainstream can muster, and deeply into an esoteric realm that cannot be breached by ideological surface dwellers.

The most important thing to know about third position's stance on the environment is that it eschews today's hysterical, shrill, over the top, agenda driven mainstream "environmentalism". Third positionists look to nature as an example for how nothing in this world is equal, and embrace nature's simple message of strength for survival. In the eyes of third position, nature is not some dumbed-down zoo attraction. It is brutal and raw, and it requires the utmost intellectual and physical strength to survive and thrive.

Finnish Eco Fascist Pentti Linkola characterizes much of third position's views on nature and the environment with his ideals that modern man is still part of nature, must remain part of nature, and must turn away from the weakness and comfort of civilization, back to the self preservationist attitude of wildlife, and ancient man.

Third positionists seek to preserve nature beyond any foolish scratchings and noises made by today's so called environmentalists. We care little for the alarmist cries of climate change as a single issue designed to gaslight the population, and choose instead to embrace the holistic approach of viewing the natural world as a completely interconnected monad that cannot be separated piecemeal for the gain or benefit of corporations, popular special interests, or moneyed elites. Man does not lord over the natural world as seen in judeo-christian dominion. Rather, he is in his rightful and proper place within it.

===Labor and the rights of workers===
Third position embraces a populist attitude, and draws equally from the true left and true right, unconcerned with what is socially popular at the time. This spirit is embodied in the vast spectrum between men like writer and investigative journalist Upton Sinclair, and his passion to showcase the plight of the voiceless worker, to Germany's leader, [[Adolf Hitler]], who advocated for living wages across the board, arguing that no job was unimportant or worth less in his nation.

Third position tends to embrace a more socialized form of labor, giving rights to the worker, and having management take a background role. A varying degree of support for labor unions, guilds, apprenticeships, and communal associations at the local level are reflective of third position's views on labor. Localism is favored, and globalism is viewed harshly.

[[Globalism]] is universally condemned as supply side economics, machinations of the wealthy elites, shadow politics, and overall, financial doom for the working man in every nation on earth. Globalism is part of the new world order of neo-liberal economics. Third position embraces localism and the usage of local laborers and products. Third position also favors the populist belief of a restricted labor pool, thus unlimited immigration into a nation must be curbed to prevent the devaluation of labor.

===Heritage and tradition===
Third position usually skews classic right on these issues, aligning with the views of men like Romania's [[Codreanu|Corneliu Codreanu]] and England's [[Oswald Mosley]] as they spoke of a rejection of modern neo-liberal democracy and a return to traditional heritage based ways of life that were specific to each individual group and region.

Religion often plays a role in the ideal third positionist setting of a society, and is not a stand-alone entity, but is woven into the very fabric of everything that government does in a way that is natural to the people who live with it.

The governmental structure of a third position society also skews classic right and embraces varying degrees of authoritarianism, one-party-statism, theocracy, and benevolent dictatorship. The democratic process has a place within this system, but does not govern it outright and is not allowed such power as to become saturated with outside influence and affect a coup d'etat upon the nation at the behest of foreign interests.

Third positionism skews largely to traditional beliefs. Men and women are not equal, but are complimentary in nature. Women are feminine and men are masculine. The outsider interest in agitating the sexes against each other is not allowed. Forced equalization of the sexes, as well as of men in general is viewed rightfully being part of neo-liberalist doctrine, and rejected. The modern [[jews]] agenda to destroy traditional societies and beliefs, be it in white nations, or others around the world, is rejected across the third positionist spectrum.

The traditional family is the central facet of the majority of ideologies which exist under the umbrella of third positionism. Children are viewed as the future, and not as simply extra working hands or cogs in a system's machines. The men and women of the nation are not expendable or disposable, and exploitation of them is not allowed.

Third position embraces varying degrees of authoritarianism. From [[Mussolini]]'s [[Italian fascism|Facism]], to Japan's highly culture oriented Showa Statism, third position nations show a wide array of general-ism in mass application, to extremely tight specifics that deal strictly with the inner workings of a single nation viewed through a Fascist lens.

Third position tends to trend towards non interventionism and isolationism in its foreign policy viewpoints. The dual cases are made such that any monies and energy in the nation must be spent on the nation, as well as the potential for imperialistic acts to deal bad blood in kind several fold to future generations.

A third positionist nation cares far more about interior issues than expansion, but this should not be mistaken for pacifism, since a third positionist nation is also one that would tend to be pro-martial, with a certain amount of military training as a requirement for all citizens. Once again, the neo-liberal ideal of foreign wars of choice is rejected in favor of a wholly new ideal based upon war as a last resort to defend the nation and possibly other national allies if they are threatened.

===Religion===
Most third position nations will include a spiritual belief system within their governing body, and in varying degrees, there will be no separation between spirituality and state. This belief system will also be in charge of overseeing the general morality of the nation and enforcing moral law when necessary. This can range from outright theocracy such as one would encounter with America's Amish population, to milder approaches like traditional Japanese Shinto, whereby the spiritual aspect is simply woven into the fabric of daily life itself.

===Race===
Third position's stance on race varies with each instance of it. Though Mussolini's Italy claimed to have no exclusive policy on race, Slavs were viewed as part of the neo-liberalist order encompassing Masonry, and many were held in internment camps.

Hitler's Germany had a very definite racial component which can be best understood through his 25 points on National Socialism.

Saddam Hussein's reign was tribal in nature and consisted of ingroups and outgroups that were not racially specific, but rather based on religious and tribal factions.

Showa Statism's Japan based Nationalism was ethnic in nature.

Mobuto's Zaire functioned as a cult of personality state, and was not racially specific in scope or ideology.

===Law, order, and economics===
Much of third position, owing to its Fascist roots, is highly order dominated. Familial piety and family duty are a central tenet in all third position instances. The tradition and order based writings of Yukio Mishima constitute an overarching third position worldview that is classically right wing based and embraced in relative fashion by each instance of third positionism.

Third position societies are more likely to be tough on crime, education focused, and representative of a social compact between government and citizen wherein the citizen has certain behavioral duties and responsibilities. An amount of time spent in the military may be a requirement for third position citizens. Third position is also etiquette based, with certain public codes of behavior.

Economically, third position eschews neo-liberalism's usage of the dollar and petro dollar, and thus has made a target of itself in the world, bearing the brunt of endless attacks by the neo-liberal west to establish its economic world hegemony and wipe out any interference. Syria is one such recent example of a nation that has found itself in the neo liberal crosshairs for economic "recalcitrance".

Third position represents such economic movements as national currency, barter, labor as currency, and commodity based currency which includes currency backed by gold. Third position does not advocate fiat currency, usury, inflationary practices such as printing currency backed by nothing more than faith, market manipulation, or mafia style practices such as predatory loans and high interest rates.

==Conclusion==

It is important to note that while third position stands in stark contrast to today's neo-[[liberal]] world order, it is not aligned with the anarcho viewpoint. Third position is counter-revolutionary in most facets and seeks to bring back worldviews of previous times whilst updating and combining them with current solutions to modern problems.

It is not staid and stagnant, however. The goal is to take the best of the past and unite it with the best of present times to create a functional and working future for the nation and its people. Neo right and neo-left are ignored and discarded for simple traditional beliefs coupled with the best that science and technology has to offer on the human scale. The overarching goals being that of creating golden age societies. Men are expected to reach beyond simply just existing and become great by exploring their full potential, physically, intellectually, and spiritually. Third positionism seeks to make that great 700 year leap of humanity towards the Sons of God.

Each instance of third position will differ based on its geopolitics, needs, and founders. Naturally, third position black nationalist groups such as Nation of Islam will be very different in goals and governing than groups like the UK's Official [[National Front]] and its calls for men to become, "new men", rejecting the ills of modern society.

Third position does not seek to be quantified and easily understood. In fact, its very nature defies easy description. The one true thing which can be said is that each instance of third position, be it white or non white, will form because a group of people have been abused by the current worldwide neo liberal order and are fed up. A way rejecting all tenets of the current new world order will be forged instead.

William Dudley Pelley (Born in March, 1890) was an American writer (Of screenplays, short stories and novels), journalist and fascist politician who ran in the 1936 presidential election as a candidate for the Christian Party. He died on June 30th of 1965 in Noblesville, Indiana and was laid to rest at the local Crownsville Cemetary.

Pelley is best known for having been the founder of [[The Silver Legion of America]], created the day following [[Adolf Hitler]] officially becoming the Chancellor of Germany. In 1942 he was arrested for "sedition" and sentenced to 15 years in prison, serving 8 before being released on parole.

William Dudley Pelley helped fight against [[Bolshevism]] in the Russian civil war while working under the Red Cross as a journalist and correspondent from ???? to 1920. He is noted as being staunchly opposed to [[Jews|jewry]] and proud of his pure English heritage.

== Early Life ==
William Dudley Pelley was born in the coastal town of Lynn, Massachusetts on March 12th of 1890 as the only son of Southern Methodist Church minister William George Aspey Pelley and his wife Grace Pelley, two years after they were wed. The Pelley family was stable but rather impoverished, the economic situation of the family further worsened in William D Pelley's early years due to the depression of 1893 (Which caused William G A Pelley to abandon the ministry) and the birth of a daughter to the family, Edna Grace.

In 1895, the family moved to the town of East Templeton. There the Pelleys resided for a few years on a small farm known as the Fairbanks Place. Here, William Dudley Pelley would be taught by the last member of the Fairbanks family -known as "Grandma Fairbanks"- basic literary skills. I have one more question for the night, I see that linking to wikipedia is discouraged, but is looking through sources on wiki pages and citing those sources to validate quotes or what have you acceptable?

Also, I capitalized "Jews" on the Machiavelli page because it was part of the title to a play, and play titles, like book titles, are meant to be capitalized (at least to my knowledge). Though, if this is a matter of principle to not capitalize jews I suppose I understand, and I will keep that in mind from now on!

=America's First Fascist=

Classical Roman concepts and figures exerted a formative influence on all of the founders’ governmental theories and principles of virtue. The founders considered [[Ancient Rome]] to be a blueprint for their new nation. Roman heroes and villains became common references in American political rhetoric.

Washington used classical symbols in his rhetoric to implicitly compare himself to Roman leaders such as [[Cincinnatus]]. By associating himself with these classical symbols, he imbued the wisdom and virtue of Roman fascists into his own messages and built a foundation rooted in historical [[fascism ]]for the fledgling American nation.

George Washington modeled his sense of courage and purpose on the characters of Cincinnatus and [[Cato the Younger]]. Cato was a Roman politician whose moral integrity inspired all of the founders.

In addition to Cato, Washington also invited comparison to the Roman [[fascist]] Cincinnatus. Cincinnatus was a stern general who was called out of retirement to lead the Roman army, but willingly resigned after winning the war. After leaving his own retirement to lead the [[Continental Army]], Washington also willingly relinquished his power at the end of the war. Per Cincinnatus, Washington placed society's needs over personal power. This is one of the reasons that we call him "America's First Fascist."

The [[Society of the Cincinnati]] is the nation’s oldest patriotic organization. It was founded in 1783 by General Washington of the Continental Army after the American Revolution, as a secret society, and as an alternative to the Freemasons, with which he had become disillusioned. His mission was to promote knowledge and appreciation of the achievement of American independence and to foster fellowship among its members. No longer a "Secret Society" it is now a nonprofit educational organization devoted to the principles and ideals of its founder.

=Slavery=
Washington owned and rented hundreds if not thousands of slaves, and during his lifetime over 577 slaves lived and worked at [[Mount Vernon]], just one of his many properties. He acquired them through inheritance, gaining control of 84 dower slaves upon his marriage to Martha, and many purchases. From 1786 he rented slaves; at the time of his death he was renting 41.

He only provided his slaves with just enough food to live, and through that he maintained strict control over them, instructing his overseers to keep them working hard from dawn to dusk year-round. Despite his frugality, Washington faced growing debts involved with the costs of supporting slaves. He held an engrained sense of racial superiority over blacks, but harbored no ill feelings toward them.

He generally sold his slaves along with the land they were working. They knew the field, and it kept the slave families together (Separating families was the most common reason for slave abscondence). In opposite fashion, he also traded slaves for land. In a 1778 letter to Lund Washington, he made clear his desire "To get quit of Niggers" when discussing the exchange of slaves for the land he wanted to buy.

==Flogging==
Washington used flogging more or less as a last resort, on both men and women slaves. Washington used both reward and punishment to encourage discipline and productivity in his slaves. He tried giving better blankets and clothing to the most deserving, but eventually gave up the practice after a recipient was killed by his jealous companions. He believed "watchfulness and admonition" to be often better deterrents against transgressions but would severely punish those who "will not do their duty by fair means". Punishment ranged in severity from demotion back to fieldwork, through whipping and beatings, [[hobbling]], and permanent separation from friends and family by sale.

Historian Ron Chernow maintains that overseers were required to warn slaves before resorting to the lash. Washington remained dependent on slave labor to work his farms and negotiated the purchase of more slaves in 1786 and 1787.

==Other habits==
Washington brought several of his slaves with him and his family to the federal capital during his presidency. When the capital moved from [[New York City]] to Philadelphia in 1791, the president began rotating his slave household staff periodically between the capital and Mount Vernon. This was done deliberately to circumvent Pennsylvania's Slavery Abolition Act, which, in part, automatically freed any slave who moved to the state and lived there for more than six months.

Washington expressed polite support for emancipation to prominent Methodists Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury in 1785 but declined to sign their petition. In 1788, Washington declined a suggestion from a leading French abolitionist, Jacques Brissot, to establish an abolitionist society in Virginia, again showing polite support. Washington never responded to any of the antislavery petitions he received, and the subject was not mentioned in either his last address to Congress or his Farewell Address.

He continued to purchase slaves until his death.

In February 1786, Washington took a census of Mount Vernon and recorded 224 slaves. By 1799, at the time of his death, slaves at Mount Vernon totaled 317, including 143 children. In his last years he considered emancipation of his many slaves, but he wanted to make sure his wife was attended to after his death. On July 9, 1799, Washington finished making his last will; the longest provision concerned slavery. All his slaves were to be freed after the death of his wife, Martha.

On January 1, 1801, one year after George Washington's death, Martha Washington signed an order to free his slaves.

=Freemasonry=

As a [[Freemason]], George Washington was a “member” for over 30 years... Except he never actually became a full member. In that time, he attended only 2 meetings total. Many Freemasons want to paint him as their most famous member, which, they literally did paint portraits of him in Freemason garb. But he never once sat for one of those, and most were done after he was dead. In fact, an outraged George Washington claimed the one painting done during his time to be “Mason [[propaganda]]!” to paint him as such. This is literally where the term "being painted as" sprang from. Freemasons painting Washington as a member, long after he got fed up with them and quit. Not that you could blame the Freemasons. He wrote publicly that the paintings amounted to slander. He hated the Masons.

Those paintings are propaganda, and still effective even today. Washington attended his few Masonry meetings in the Lodge at Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Lodge’s surviving minute book records Washington attending only two meetings: September 1, 1753, and January 4, 1755. There is a record showing that on November 4, 1752, he paid the lodge two pounds and three shillings to join but declined to take the oath and did not join.

Records also show that he visited King Solomon’s Lodge in Poughkeepsie, New York, on December 27, 1783. He was there to meet one of the members and signed the guest register. There were no Masonic events that day. Additionally, Washington had close relations with Masonic members and was a guest at several dinners.

After the war, in 1784, Washington accepted the invitation of his friends and neighbors to attend a June banquet at Alexandria Lodge No. 39, where he was elected an honorary member. This means that in spite of all the maneuvering, the gifts, the paintings, honors given him retroactively after his death, that Washington was never a Freemason. This is according to the Mason Society's own records.

Records show, George Washington had a very close association with his home church, Christ Church, in Alexandria, VA. You can go to this church today and sit in the very church “box” which belonged to the Washington family. His adopted daughter, Nelly, (who was, in fact, his step-granddaughter) noted he rarely missed a Sunday, even if roads were bad and it took them over 2-3 hours to get there.

While he was traveling with his military and political career, which was indeed much of his career, record after record shows he attended church. Whether he was wintering at Valley Forge, or while he was in the First Continental and Constitutional Congresses in Philadelphia, he would attend services and fervently prayed. Right after he was inaugurated as [[President of the United States]] at Federal Hall in New York City, he immediately went to church to commit his presidency in prayer.

Rev Henry Muhlenberg, an active Revolutionary who served with General Washington at Valley Forge, recorded that the General “rode around among his army…and admonished each and every one to fear God…and to practice Christian values.”

On the other hand, [[humanism]] in Machiavelli's time meant that classical pre-Christian ideas about virtue and prudence, including the possibility of trying to control one's future, were not unique to him. But humanists did not go so far as to promote the extra glory of deliberately aiming to establish a new state, in defiance of traditions and laws.

While Machiavelli's approach had classical precedents, it has been argued that it did more than just bring back old ideas and that Machiavelli was not a typical humanist. {{Harvcoltxt|Strauss|1958}} argues that the way Machiavelli combines classical ideas is new. While Xenophon and Plato also described realistic politics and were closer to Machiavelli than Aristotle was, they, like Aristotle, also saw philosophy as something higher than politics. Machiavelli's promotion of ambition among leaders while denying any higher standard meant that he encouraged risk-taking, and innovation, most famously the founding of new modes and orders. His advice to princes was therefore certainly not limited to discussing how to maintain a state. It has been argued that Machiavelli's promotion of innovation led directly to the argument for progress as an aim of [[politics]] and [[civilization]]. But while a belief that humanity can control its own future, control nature, and "progress" has been long-lasting, Machiavelli's followers, starting with his own friend [[Francesco Guicciardini|Guicciardini]], have tended to prefer peaceful progress through economic development, and not aggressive or violent progress. Machiavelli however, along with some of his classical predecessors, saw ambition and spiritedness, and therefore war, as inevitable and part of [[natural law]].

Although a spiritual man, his distaste for the Catholic Church greatly shaped his views on religion, and he disliked organized religion greatly. ===Positive side to factional and individual vice===
Despite the classical precedents, which Machiavelli was not the only one to promote in his time, Machiavelli's realism and willingness to argue that good ends may sometimes justify bad things, is seen as a critical stimulus towards some of the most important theories of modern politics.

Firstly, particularly in the ''Discourses on Livy,'' Machiavelli is unusual in the positive side he sometimes seems to describe in factionalism in republics. For example, quite early in the ''Discourses,'' (In Book I, chapter 4), a chapter title announces that ''the disunion'' of the [[plebs]] and [[Roman senate|senate]] in Rome ''"kept Rome free".'' That a community has different components whose interests must be balanced in any good reign is an idea with classical precedents, but Machiavelli's particularly extreme presentation is seen as a critical step towards the later political ideas of both a [[division of powers]] or [[checks and balances]]; fascist, [[mixed government]] ideas which lay behind the [[US constitution]], as well as many other modern state constitutions.

Similarly, the modern economic argument for [[capitalism]], and most modern forms of economics, was often stated in the form of "public virtue from private vices." Also in this case, even though there are classical precedents, Machiavelli's insistence on being both realistic and ambitious, not only admitting that vice exists but being willing to risk encouraging it, is a critical step on the path to this insight.

Mansfield however argues that Machiavelli's own aims have not been shared by those he influenced. Machiavelli argued against seeing mere peace and economic growth as worthy aims on their own, if they would lead to what Mansfield calls the "taming of the prince."<ref>{{Harvtxt|Mansfield|1993}}</ref>

Machiavelli's ideas had a profound impact on political leaders throughout the modern west, helped by the new technology of the printing press. During the first generations after Machiavelli, his main influence was in non-republican governments. Pole reported that ''The Prince'' was spoken of highly by [[Thomas Cromwell]] in England and had influenced [[Henry VIII]] in his turn towards Protestantism, and in his tactics.<ref name="BireleyP15">{{Harvcoltxt|Bireley|1990|p=15}}</ref> A copy was also possessed by the Catholic king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.<ref>{{Harvcoltxt|Haitsma Mulier|1999|p=248}}</ref> In France, after an initially mixed reaction, Machiavelli came to be associated with [[Catherine de' Medici]] and the [[St. Bartholomew's Day massacre]]. One of the most important early works dedicated to criticism of Machiavelli, especially ''The Prince'', was that of the [[Huguenot]], [[Innocent Gentillet]], whose work commonly referred to as ''Discourse against Machiavelli'' or ''Anti Machiavel'' was published in [[Geneva]] in 1576.<ref>The first English edition was ''A Discourse upon the meanes of wel governing and maintaining in good peace, a Kingdome, or other principalitie'', translated by Simon Patericke.</ref> He accused Machiavelli of being an atheist (Which he was not) and accused politicians of his time by saying that his works were the "Koran of the courtiers", that "he is of no reputation in the court of France which hath not Machiavel's writings at the fingers ends".<ref>{{Harvcoltxt|Bireley|1990|p=17}}</ref> Another theme of Gentillet was more in the spirit of Machiavelli himself: he questioned the effectiveness of immoral strategies (Just as Machiavelli had himself done). Modern [[materialist]] philosophy developed in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, starting in the generations after Machiavelli. This philosophy tended to be republican/fascist, but as with the Catholic authors, Machiavelli's realism and encouragement of using innovation to try to control one's own fortune were more accepted than his emphasis upon war and factional violence. Machiavelli's literary executor, Giuliano de' Ricci, also reported having seen that Machiavelli, his grandfather, made a comedy in the style of [[Aristophanes]] which included living Florentines as characters, and to be titled ''Le Maschere''.
