Many occur annually and many take place around June to commemorate the Stonewall riots in the United States. The parades do not just express pride, but also serve as political propaganda events, such as for [[homosexual marriage]] and adoption rights.

The parades are often deliberately provoking and may break indecent exposure laws and similar laws. In part, this may have the goal of desensitizing the mainstream to nontraditional sexuality.
