Great Britain, along with France, declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939 due to the German invasion of Poland. After the fall of France on 25 June 1940, Great Britain stood alone among the Western countries against Germany until 7 December 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor when the USA declared war on Japan. Germany in turn declared war on the USA on 11 December of the same year. Britain was then to be the base for the invasion of Normandy in June 1944.
