James Monroe (28 April 1758 - 4 July 1831) was the fifth president of the United States (1817–25). His name is associated with the Monroe Doctrine, a warning to European nations against intervening in the Western Hemisphere.
He supported the Back-to-Africa movement and was a member of the American Colonization Society.
