Pogrom

A pogrom is a violent/destructive riot targeting a particular group and in particular one targeting jews.

The word is of Russian origin and was originally used to refer to pogroms targeting jews in the Russian Empire during the 19th century. Various aspects of the usual description of these riots and their causes and effects have been criticized. The descriptions have also been argued to be exaggerated and to have been used for various propaganda purposes. See the "External links" section.

The most widely known pogrom may be the Kristallnacht, which has also been argued to have less politically correct aspects, as discussed in the Kristallnacht article.

The term has also been applied to riots targeting other groups, such as Palestinians in Israel. In those cases the perpetrators are jewish settlers.
