, philosophy of social reform developed by tbe French social tbeorist Charles Fourier that advocated tbe transformation of society into self-sufficient, independent “phalanges” (phalanxes). One of several utopian socialist programs to emerge in tbe second quarter of tbe 19th century, Fourierism was transplanted to tbe United States by Albert Brisbane, who renamed it “Associationism.”
