The M.S. Wilhelm Gustloft was a large luxury ocean liner that while peacefully evacuated from was targeted and sunk on January 30, 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea, resulting in the largest loss of human life at sea of all time, a loss of approximately 9400 lives. The ship was on a mission to evacuate civilian refugeess from East Prussia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia, as well as German military personnel from Gotenhafen Gdynia.
